My Journey

I went to Sri Lanka in February 2020. First stopping at the lazy sea side town of Negombo was a perfect place to rest, explore and get over jet lag. The long beaches and the lagoon were stunning. The best decision I made was hiring a Tuk Tuk to drive around the country at my own pace and to be able to really get off the beaten track.

The next was the North central region to see the "Cultural triangle". Anadhapura, Sigiriya and Polonawura. This was an truly authentic experience visiting the various temple complexes and stupas (many are UNESCO sites), seeing locals and monks come to these religious sites to pray and bring offerings, traditionally dressed in white.

Next was a short stay in the old capital city of Kandy. The city is very hectic but has many temples and picturesque sites to visit on the outskirts. The must see here is the Temple of the tooth buddhist temple. Going at prayer time is a great time to go as they practice traditional ceremonies.

Next was up in the mountain regions; Ella and Nuwara Eliya. A much appreciated rest from the heat whilst hiking and enjoying endless views of tea plantations and of course sampling hand picked tea. Part of the famous train journey passes through this area and cannot be missed, it was a truly authentic way of enjoying the scenery with the locals on an old train.

Last was to spend a few days on the south coast between Tangalle, Mirissa and Anawatuna. The secret beaches and stunning sunsets was a perfect place to relax and unwind.

The nature and wildlife in Sri Lanka is like I've never seen anywhere before. Wild animals at every turn, and doing 2 safaris to see elephants, Leopards and bears were the absolute highlight!
